Fortunately, we had Martin and his team, who were able to strengthen and secure the timber work and walls, even though this meant having to completely re-slate the whole roof ! If you want a job done on the cheap, then don’t ask Martin. However, if you want it done properly and to a very high standard, then Martin is your man. No short cuts or quick fixes with him, instead, a very much 'belt and braces' approach to each problem encountered. February 2023 I recently got in touch with Martin Sayers of Devon Chimneys to come to look at our very large chimney that had been leaking and causing water damage inside our living room. I emailed his company and Martin called back the same day, and arranged a day when he could come and look at the job and give me an Estimate. Martin kept the appointment and arrived at the time we had agreed on. Martin was incredibly knowledgeable about chimneys and spent over two and a half hours looking over the job and gave us several options as how to approach the work that would be needed. Martin was very polite and helpful, and had the use of a drone, depending on the weather, and was able to get great footage of the state of our chimney which was very helpful for him and us in deciding what works needed to be carried out. He was very honest about all of the aspects and costs and put our minds at rest that the work would be done to a high standard. I would highly recommend Martin Sayers and his company Devon chimneys. Martin Sayers and his team fitted a new bathroom for me in a rented property in Torrington. Martin is straight talking, friendly, honest and an absolute pleasure to work with. We recently instructed Martin to complete a chimney repair at our property. I have decent outsider knowledge of the construction industry and from the initial inspection it was clear to me that Martin was a real building professional with a wealth of knowledge and experience. Once the work had commenced Martin made the whole process seamless, he was very professional, got on with the job, took the time to explain what was happening at every stage of the process and most importantly I had absolute trust in him, so it was one less thing for me to worry about.

 

If you want a builder that you can trust to tell you what you need as opposed to what will make them the most money, will get the job done accurately, timely and courteously, not inflate costs on any additional works  required and deliver the job with the minimal amount of stress/fuss, then I would wholeheartedly recommend Martin as this is exactly what he did for me.

we engaged Martin Sayers to remove our bath and replace it with a shower tray and glass cubicle. I was very impressed by Martin and his colleague's grasp of the detail requirements and potential issues. These issues were quickly discussed and remedies agreed.

Martin completed all the works to a very high standard and below budget while we were away on holiday.

We asked Martin Sayers for a price to change some Chimney Cowls to prevent birds and rain coming in.  On examination both of the chimneys were found to be in a very dangerous state and roof slates were found to be slipping/crumbling.  A price was agreed to replace both Chimneys  and the natural Slate roof covering too.

 

The works took a little longer than we would have liked, but the wet weather played its part in the time scale!  Also Mr. Sayers works on all of his contracts and does not solely rely on sub-contractors, which in our mind only adds to the reassurance.

 

However the wait was worth it, because the final result was excellent and we have received favourable comments regarding the quality of the work.  Since completion we have endured at least two gales and driving rain, both roof and chimneys have  passed this test with flying colours.

I bought the property in question in 2004   It is constructed of concrete blockwork and painted render. From the outset the southern elevation paintwork would blister in various areas and often those blisters would contain water.  Initial investigations were undertaken resulting in no issues found, but still the damp persisted.

 

Remaining quite frustrated with the situation I invited Martin Sayers to take a look and if possible, make an assessment with a possible view to remedial works. He suggested removing some blocks in various areas to gain a decent view within the cavity. I mentioned that this had been done on one occasion previously and that damp was not present.  Mr. Sayers insisted that no progress would be made without these exploratory works, so I conceded.

 

Martin Sayers found evidence of damp within the cavity at heads of windows and patio doors where the original house Builders had omitted cavity trays and weep vents across the lintels. Faulty tiled cills and poorly replaced windows were all contributing to the problem.

 

These damp problems have now been solved by fitting purpose made cavity trays above and below window and door openings where they were deemed appropriate. The introduction of new slate cills of the correct length and depth and fitted at the correct angle have all contributed to a sound, secure and above all, a dry job.

 

Should you have Building related Damp issues then I would not hesitate to give Martin Sayers a call.

I am pleased to be able to recommend Martin Sayers for any type of building work, both internal and external.

 

Over the past 10 years in my home, Martin has renovated two bathrooms, 'tanked' and re plastered (lime plaster) a study, built a front porch and re rendered the whole farm house (lime plaster) after removing and re-pointing and in places rebuilding walls and replacing lintels. He also built a retaining wall in the garden and installed a new water tank supplying the house and farm sheds.

 

At all times I have found Martin to be reliable, honest and professional and his work is excellent and the finish is outstanding. Martin works well to a plan but is also very good at problem solving if an issue arises.

 

I don't believe there is any building work that Martin would not be capable of undertaking and I will certainly be using him again when the need arises.

I had my Chimney re-built about 5-6 years ago and since then it has leaked quite badly with the water even finding its way into the Ground floor ceiling!!

 

After years of frustration I asked Martin Sayers to investigate. He carefully demolished the saturated chimney and he found various issues ranging from incorrectly installed Lead work within the stack, to missing Lead work around the stack and faulty roof tiling adjacent.

 

Mr. Sayers has now resolved the issues to my complete satisfaction.

Dear Martin,

 

May we take the opportunity of saying thank you for the rebuilding and remedial work you carried out for us earlier this year.  The greatest quality was the skill and knowledge applied to a property nearly 250 years old particularly in some of its hidden problems.  It’s a real pleasure to see the quality of the finished work as one moves around the home particularly the chimneys.  The temptation is to be over elaborate and overspend with this type of property; the advice was very good and thorough, the result being the value per pound spent was exceptional.

 

Points to note about the different aspects of the work was the cleanliness and lack of litter together with the work being executed on the day stated and not allowed to drift in an unplanned way.

 

Martin and the workforce could be best described as good humoured gentlemen, a most important factor when people are living in the property.  Should the need arise we will be pleased to show the work to prospective clients.
